Appliqué refers to a needlework technique in which patterns or representational scenes are created by the attachment of smaller pieces of fabric to a larger piece of contrasting color or texture. In this sense, appliqué refers to using fabric shapes/designs usually on the trim of a garment. This can either be sewn or glued. This beautiful work originates from a village known as Pipli in Orissa. Here, another technique is prominent, known as the reverse appliqué, in which one layer of fabric is placed on another layer. A shape is then cut out from the top layer, exposing the lower layer. These two are then neatly stitched together. The general motifs used in this work are flora and fauna, and some mythical creatures.
